Change AVGS Provider – Is It Possible?

Can I change my AVGS provider?

After receiving an AVGS, many people start looking for a suitable coaching provider or training organisation. Sometimes, however, the first choice turns out not to be the right one. The schedule may not work, the coaching content may not match expectations, or the personal cooperation may simply not feel productive.

This leads to an important question: Can you change your AVGS provider?

The answer depends largely on whether the coaching has already started. Before the measure begins, changing providers is usually much easier. Once the coaching is already running, you should not simply stop one approved measure and start another without first clarifying the situation with the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit.

In this article, we explain what you should consider, when a change may make sense and how to approach the process carefully.

What is an AVGS provider?

An AVGS provider is an approved organisation that offers a measure which can be funded through an Aktivierungs- und Vermittlungsgutschein.

Can I choose my AVGS provider?

The provider must fit the conditions of the voucher

Once you have received an AVGS, you can look for a suitable provider whose programme matches the conditions written on your voucher.

However, this does not mean that every coaching programme is automatically eligible for funding.

Before making a final decision, check whether:

  • the programme matches the goal of your AVGS,
  • the provider is properly approved,
  • the duration fits the voucher,
  • regional conditions are respected,
  • the measure can begin within the validity period.

An initial consultation can therefore be very useful before you commit to one provider.

Can I change providers before coaching starts?

Before the start, the process is usually simpler

If you have already spoken to one provider but the coaching has not yet started, changing to another suitable provider is generally much easier than changing during an active measure.

You may realise after the first conversation that another provider offers a programme that fits your goals better, has more suitable appointment times or provides a more appropriate coaching format.

As long as the new measure also matches the conditions of your AVGS, it may be possible to choose a different provider before the start.

If you are still deciding which format suits you best, you may also find Individual Coaching or Group Coaching: Which Is Right for You? helpful.

What if the coaching has already started?

Once an AVGS-funded measure has started, the situation is different. The support was arranged and approved for a specific measure and provider.

For this reason, you should not simply stop the programme and begin another one elsewhere without clarification.

If you are dissatisfied, the first step should be to identify the problem as clearly as possible.

Possible reasons for wanting to change provider

  • the content does not match what was discussed,
  • appointments are repeatedly cancelled or unsuitable,
  • communication is poor,
  • the coaching does not fit your professional situation,
  • there are serious organisational problems,
  • the personal working relationship is not productive.

Not every problem means that a provider change is necessary. Sometimes a direct conversation with the coach can already improve the situation.

What should I do if I am unhappy with my coach?

Explain the problem clearly first

Coaching depends heavily on communication and expectations. Sometimes the coach may focus on career orientation while you were expecting more practical support with job applications.

In such a case, it can help to explain exactly what you need.

You can discuss:

  • which topics are most important to you,
  • which goals you want to achieve,
  • which areas have not been covered enough,
  • what type of support you expected.

Individual coaching should usually reflect your personal employment situation. You can read more about this in Individual Coaching with AVGS: What Happens in Job Coaching?.

When can changing an AVGS provider make sense?

A change should not necessarily happen after one disappointing session. Coaching can involve challenging conversations, and not every meeting will feel equally useful.

However, if there are persistent and serious problems, it may be reasonable to discuss another solution.

A provider change may be worth considering if:

  • the programme consistently does not match your goals,
  • important agreed topics are not addressed,
  • constructive cooperation is not possible,
  • there are ongoing organisational difficulties.

Before ending a running measure, however, it is important to clarify what consequences this may have.

Why should I contact the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit first?

An AVGS-funded coaching programme is not simply a private service that can be changed at any time without consequences.

The funding is connected to specific conditions, a particular measure and an approved process.

If you want to change provider, explain the situation to your adviser in a factual way.

It can help to describe:

  • what is not working in the current measure,
  • how long the problem has existed,
  • whether you tried to solve it directly,
  • why another provider may fit your goals better.

A specific explanation is usually much more useful than simply saying that you do not like the provider.

Can I just look for a new AVGS provider?

The new provider still has to fit your voucher

If a change is possible, the new provider should be selected just as carefully as the first one.

Do not focus only on the website or the first impression. The concrete programme should match both your professional goal and the conditions written on the AVGS.

Useful questions include:

  • What topics are covered in the coaching?
  • Is the programme individual or standardised?
  • What professional goals are addressed?
  • How often do appointments take place?
  • Will I have a fixed contact person?
  • Does the programme fit my AVGS?

What should good AVGS coaching include?

Good coaching should not consist only of general conversations. It should focus on your real professional situation and help you make practical progress.

Depending on your needs, coaching may include:

  • career orientation,
  • analysis of strengths and experience,
  • CV improvement,
  • cover letter support,
  • job search strategy,
  • interview preparation,
  • planning the next career step.

If application documents are an important issue for you, read Improve Your Application Documents: CV and Cover Letter.

For interview preparation, see Job Interview in Germany: How to Prepare Successfully.

What if the new provider offers a different type of coaching?

This point should be checked carefully. An existing AVGS is usually issued for a certain purpose and may contain specific conditions.

If the new provider offers a completely different measure, it may not automatically be covered by the same voucher.

For this reason, it is useful to show the AVGS to the new provider and ask whether the programme fits the voucher.

If there is any uncertainty, clarify the issue with your Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit before making a binding agreement.

What if my AVGS is close to expiring?

The validity period is another important factor. If you want to change providers but the voucher is close to its expiry date, there may be additional time pressure.

Check:

  • how long your AVGS is still valid,
  • whether the new measure can be organised in time,
  • whether a new voucher may be necessary.

You can find more information in How Long Is an AVGS Valid? Deadlines, Expiry and a New Voucher.

Could a new AVGS be required?

That depends on the exact situation

If the existing voucher no longer fits the new measure or has already expired, you may need to clarify whether a new AVGS is necessary.

A new voucher is not automatically issued. The decision depends on your current situation and whether there is still a recognised need for support.

If you want to understand the general application process, read How to Get an AVGS in Hamburg | Process & Requirements.

What if the Jobcenter does not agree to the change?

If you want to change during an active measure, the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit may first need more information or may not consider a change necessary.

In that case, ask for the reason and explain the difficulties as clearly as possible.

It may also help to document recurring problems, especially if they affect the quality or organisation of the coaching.

For more information about refusals in general, see Can the Jobcenter Refuse an AVGS? Reasons and What You Can Do.

Do I have to pay if I change provider?

This is an important point. Do not simply begin a paid coaching programme with a new provider and assume that the costs will later be reimbursed automatically.

A funded measure should be properly clarified and approved before it starts.

For more information about costs, read Do I Have to Pay for AVGS Coaching? Costs & Funding and How Much Does AVGS Coaching Cost? Funding Explained.

How can I avoid having to change provider later?

Not every problem can be predicted in advance, but a good initial consultation can reduce the risk of misunderstandings.

Before starting, you can ask:

  • Who will be my coach?
  • Which topics can we work on?
  • How individual is the programme?
  • How often are sessions scheduled?
  • Can the coaching be adapted to my situation?
  • What are the main goals of the measure?

The clearer the expectations are before the start, the easier it is to decide whether the provider is a good fit.

Is changing provider always the best solution?

No. Coaching can sometimes feel challenging because it may involve honest feedback and difficult decisions.

A coach who questions your strategy is not automatically a bad coach.

The key question is whether the cooperation remains constructive and whether the coaching helps you move toward your professional goals.

If the problem is mainly based on different expectations, a direct conversation may solve it.

If there are serious and ongoing problems, however, it may be appropriate to discuss a provider change with the responsible authority.

Conclusion: Changing your AVGS provider may be possible

Changing an AVGS provider can be possible, but the timing matters.

Before the coaching starts, it is usually easier to choose another suitable provider as long as the new measure still fits the conditions of your voucher.

If the coaching is already running, you should not simply stop the measure and begin another one elsewhere. First discuss the situation with the provider if possible, and then clarify the next steps with the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit.

The goal should always be to find a solution that supports your professional progress without creating problems with the funding process.
