Can you get AVGS coaching while working or having a Minijob?
Many people assume that AVGS coaching is only available if you are completely unemployed. In reality, the situation can be more flexible. Having a Minijob or even being employed does not automatically mean that AVGS support is impossible.
What matters is your overall employment situation. Are you still looking for a more stable job? Is your current contract ending soon? Do you receive additional support from the Jobcenter? Are you trying to move from a Minijob into regular employment? Or do you need help to improve your chances on the labour market?
For this reason, it is worth looking at your situation in detail instead of assuming that work automatically excludes AVGS coaching.
What is an AVGS?
AVGS stands for Aktivierungs- und Vermittlungsgutschein. It is a funding instrument used by the Jobcenter or the Agentur für Arbeit to support people who need help entering or returning to the labour market.
Depending on the individual case, AVGS funding can be used for measures such as:

Can you get an AVGS if you have a Minijob?
A Minijob does not automatically exclude funding
Having a Minijob does not necessarily mean that you no longer need employment support. Many people work a limited number of hours and are still looking for more secure, better paid or socially insured employment.
In such cases, the key question is whether there is still a clear need for support and whether the coaching can improve your employment prospects.
A Minijob may be part of your current situation while you are also:
- looking for full-time work,
- looking for a socially insured part-time position,
- trying to improve your application strategy,
- considering a career change,
- trying to move into a more stable job.
Whether AVGS funding is approved always depends on the individual assessment by the responsible Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit adviser.
What if you already work part-time or full-time?
Existing employment does not automatically rule out coaching in every situation.
For example, support may still be relevant if your current job is insecure, temporary or likely to end soon. In such situations, it can be useful to take action before unemployment actually begins.
Typical situations may include:
- a fixed-term contract is about to end,
- you have received notice or expect termination,
- your current job is not financially sustainable,
- you need to change profession,
- you are looking for a more stable position.

What role does Bürgergeld play?
Some people are employed and still receive Bürgergeld because their income is not enough to cover their living costs. In that situation, the Jobcenter may still be involved in helping them improve their employment situation.
The goal may be to move into a better paid job, increase working hours or reduce long-term dependence on additional support.
Coaching can help with goals such as:
- moving from a Minijob into regular employment,
- increasing working hours,
- finding better paid work,
- improving application documents,
- preparing for interviews.
Whether a specific measure is suitable is always assessed individually.
What does “at risk of unemployment” mean?
AVGS support can also be relevant for people who are still employed but are likely to lose their job in the near future.
This may be the case if:
- your employment contract ends soon,
- you have received notice,
- your company is reducing staff,
- your continued employment is uncertain.
In such cases, it can be important to register as a jobseeker early and discuss possible support before the employment relationship ends.
Career coaching can then help you use the remaining time to prepare for the next step instead of waiting until you are already unemployed.
Why can coaching still make sense if you are employed?
Job coaching is not only useful for people who are completely out of work. It can also help people who are employed but do not have a clear or stable professional future.
A Minijob, temporary position or low-paid job may be a temporary solution rather than a long-term goal.
Coaching can help you identify where you want to go next and what needs to change to get there.
Typical coaching topics include:
- defining realistic career goals,
- analysing professional strengths,
- identifying suitable vacancies,
- improving your CV,
- working on cover letters,
- preparing for interviews,
- developing a structured job search strategy.

Can a Minijob be a step toward better employment?
Yes. For some people, a Minijob is a useful first step back into the labour market. It can provide structure, work experience and new contacts.
At the same time, it does not have to remain the final destination.
If your long-term goal is regular employment, coaching can help you plan the transition more strategically and avoid getting stuck in a situation that does not offer enough income or development.
This can be particularly helpful after a longer period of unemployment. More information is available in Long-Term Unemployment: How to Return to Work Successfully.
Which conditions are important?
Whether AVGS funding is possible depends on your personal situation and the level of support you need.
Relevant factors may include whether you:
- are unemployed,
- are at risk of becoming unemployed,
- are registered as a jobseeker,
- receive Bürgergeld,
- need support to improve your employment prospects.
It is important to understand that an AVGS is not automatically guaranteed. The responsible adviser checks whether the measure is appropriate for your situation.
You can read more about the process in AVGS from the Agentur für Arbeit: Requirements and Process.
What should you say to the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit?
It is usually better to explain your goal clearly instead of simply saying that you want coaching.
For example, you might say:
- “I have a Minijob, but I am looking for regular employment.”
- “My contract will end soon and I want to find a new job before that happens.”
- “I am employed, but I need to change career direction.”
- “I still receive Bürgergeld and want to improve my income situation.”
The more clearly you explain your professional goal, the easier it is for the adviser to understand why support may be useful.
What happens if AVGS funding is refused?
A refusal does not automatically mean that coaching is impossible in every form.
It is useful to ask why the AVGS was not approved. The adviser may believe that the current level of support is sufficient or that another measure is more appropriate.
Sometimes additional information or a more specific employment goal can help clarify the situation.

Do you have to pay for AVGS coaching yourself?
If coaching is approved under an AVGS and the measure meets the relevant conditions, the participant normally does not pay the cost of the funded coaching personally.
It is therefore important not to begin a paid measure independently and assume that reimbursement will happen later automatically.

Can individual coaching be funded?
Individual coaching can be especially useful if your situation is specific and cannot be addressed well in a general group format.
This may apply if you are already employed and need targeted support rather than basic orientation.
For example, your goal may be to move from a Minijob into regular employment, prepare for a career change or improve your applications for better positions.
You can read more in Individual Coaching with AVGS: What Happens in Job Coaching?.
Are there alternatives to AVGS?
Not every situation is funded through an AVGS. Depending on your goal, other forms of support may also be relevant.
Possible alternatives can include:
- further training,
- Bildungsgutschein,
- other Jobcenter measures,
- career orientation support.
If training is more relevant to your situation, you may want to read Further Training in Hamburg: Options, Funding and Opportunities and Bildungsgutschein in Hamburg: Requirements and Funding.
AVGS with a Minijob: your professional goal matters most
The main point is simple: having a Minijob or another form of employment does not, by itself, answer whether AVGS coaching is possible.
The decisive factor is your professional situation and what the support is meant to achieve.
If you are still looking for regular employment, receive additional Jobcenter support or are at risk of losing your job, it may be worth discussing available options with the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit.
Conclusion: AVGS coaching may be possible even if you work
A Minijob does not automatically exclude AVGS coaching. Even with existing employment, support may still be possible if there is a clear need to improve your employment situation.
The most important thing is to explain your situation clearly and focus on the professional goal. If you want to move from a Minijob into regular employment, avoid upcoming unemployment or improve your long-term job prospects, make that clear during your consultation.
Whether an AVGS is approved is always decided individually by the responsible authority.
